Lab 17: Skeletal Muscle Structure
PURPOSE:
To review the structure of a skeletal muscle
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Describe how connective tissue is associated with muscle tissue within a skeletal muscle
2. Name and locate the major parts of a skeletal muscle fiber
PROCEDURE:
1. Review the Structure of Skeletal muscle tissue in Cpt 7 pages 178-182, and the Skeletal Muscle Tissue page
2. Reexamine the microscopic structure of skeletal muscle tissue by examining the HistoWeb slides 1-7. Draw a picture of slides 2 and 7 in your Lab Notebook and label the following: muscle fiber, nuclei, striations, myofibrils
3. Print out the images below, paste them into your Lab Notebook and label figures 17.1, 17.2, and 17.3
4. Complete Part A in your Lab Notebook
5. Examine the model of a muscle fiber and identify the following labeled items: sarcolemma, sarcoplasm, mitochondria, myofibril (myosin and actin filaments), sarcomere (A & I bands and Z line), sarcoplasmic reticulum, transverse tubules, opening to the T-Tubes
6. Complete Part B and Part C in your Lab Notebook
7. As you complete the lab, Review the "Lab Objectives" from the handout and write a synopsis of the lab addressing the two objectives.
